Let’s “Mussel Up” to the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge for this brand new TNP Continuing Education course teaming the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to provide instruction on the life, ecology and conservation efforts of these amazing aquatic species. Join us as TWRA mussel biologist David Sims conducts a 5- hour field class at the confluence of the Duck and Tennessee Rivers. Past surveys have found 35 species of mussels along one mile of refuge shoreline at this location making it the perfect place to learn about and identify multiple species.
REGISTRATION is available to current TNP Students and Alumni from June 4 - 15 and open to the general public afterwards. Bring your lunch, water, shoes that can get wet and muddy, hat and sunscreen. Come prepared to get wet, at least from the waist down as we will be “toe digging” for mussels.

Located on and around Kentucky Lake in Northwest Tennessee, the refuge’s three units, Big Sandy, Duck River, and Busseltown, stretch for 65 miles along the Tennessee River. Established in 1945, the refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and was created as an area for migratory birds.
